Promaco
One of the more successful diversification initiatives of the Central Romana Corporation, has been the creation of the company Producción de Materiales de Construcción, better known as PROMACO, which creates a wide range of construction materials.
The main products manufactured by PROMACO include premixed concrete, prefabricated building materials, large scale reinforced materials and others. The use of its materials range from the construction of small homes, large commercial buildings, bridges, culverts and many more. PROMACO can easily be identified as a great contributor to the foundation of the private and public construction industry of the Dominican Republic.
Subsequently, the construction materials of the PROMACO plant have also been used in the construction of the industrial warehouses that operate in the free trade zones of La Romana. PROMACO has the capacity to supply the demand for concrete blocks, floor tiles, prefabricated floors and other products that are required for the ongoing development and construction in the eastern region of the country.
The origins of PROMACO begins when the company had to continuously upgrade and maintain over 350 kilometers of railway it had constructed for the transportation of sugarcane. Its ongoing need to repair and maintain the railroad crossbeams and its foundation prompted the research for more efficient materials. During the process of maintaining the railroads, the company developed a special division, later spun off as PROMACO, which with the use of heavy machinery it processed the limestone deposits found in the company's property. The resulting material is used as the base of railroad foundation. During the processing of the limestone, the technicians noticed that the dust produced from the crushing of the limestone, could be processed with other aggregates to produce a mixture that is used in the manufacture of the concrete crossbeams when reinforced with steel. The company developed this process with a Belgian technology, to which it had access. For that reason the crossbeams that the Central Romana Corporation uses are no longer imported, thus providing another cost savings to the company, as a result of its successful vertical integration.
PROMACO has also successfully become a leader in the creation of prefabricated homes, primarily for use by its labor force. Utilizing a German technology, the company has constructed over 4,500 homes in the last 25 years.
