Central Romana Corporation

Agriculture

In the agricultural industry the contribution of the Central Romana has been significant. In the beginning and over several decades, the company depended on imports of sugarcane varieties from Puerto Rico and Barbados, but in 1947 the company decided to seize the opportunity to become increasingly self sufficient and created its own department of agricultural research and development, which has since made great contributions in the farming industry of the Dominican Republic.

Presently, 95% of the seeded cane fields, currently in excess of 166,000 acres, are varieties of sugar cane strains created by the Central Romana Corporation, resulting in an impressive overall increase in the total sugar yield of over 11%. Over the past 15 years, the company has developed and patented over 15 commercial varieties of sugar cane.

To this day, the company counts on a collection of over 2,600 different varieties of sugarcane, created by cultivating seedlings through maturation and creating generations after generations of new sugarcane varieties. These extraordinary advances have not only benefited the Central Romana Corporation, but also many other sugar producers in the country, whose sugarcane fields are primarily seeded with varieties of sugarcane developed by the Central Romana Corporation, and provided without any cost to the farmer. Given the success achieved with its sugar production business, and encouraged by the Dominican government, the company has over the years decided to incorporate the production of other agricultural products into its business model.
